A​ winter storm is tracking across the Plains and upper Midwest where it will continue to bring snow and strong winds into Wednesday.

T​his storm system, named Winter Storm Hudson by The Weather Channel, is also producing severe weather in the South.

W​inter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service and stretch from the Northern and Central Plains into the upper Mississippi valley and northern Great Lakes. The worst travel conditions will generally be in areas under winter storm warnings, including Minneapolis-St. Paul.

F​orecast Timing

W​ednesday-Friday

T​he storm will begin to weaken on Wednesday, but it will produce lingering snow and gusty winds in the upper Mississippi valley and northern Great Lakes.

It will produce light snowfall in the Great Lakes and northern New England on Thursday. Lingering light snow is possible in the interior Northeast on Friday.

H​ow Much Snow To Expect

The best chance for at least 5 inches of additional snowfall is from parts of central and southern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Totals could approach a foot within parts of this corridor, especially where bands of heavier snow develop and persist for multiple hours. This could include parts of the Twin Cities metro area.

S​torm History

T​his storm got its start in California over the weekend.

The state saw flooding rainfall, strong winds and feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Up to 54 inches fell in the southern Sierra at Mammoth Mountain.

T​he storm then spread into the Rockies on Sunday and Sunday night.

U​tah's Wasatch picked up to four feet of snowfall and Flagstaff, Arizona, nearly saw a foot of snow.

O​ver two feet of snow fell in parts of South Dakota. In Nebraska, some towns saw a foot and a half of snow.

P​arts of Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa reported ice accumulations due to freezing rain.
