Snowfall has made its annual return to portions of the western United States already this fall and now this week, parts of the East, including northern New York, New England and the central Appalachians, are seeing their first wet snowflakes.

For some, the first snow of the season can conjure up excitement, while for others it might trigger a groan since it's a reminder of the shoveling to come.

No matter what side of the fence you sit on, we've collected some social media posts from this early-season snowfall in order to set the mood for the coming weeks and months ahead.

First up, early-season snows can create a stark contrast with fall foliage, as seen Monday at Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Resort in Maine.

That contrast with fall foliage was also seen on a New York State Mesonet webcam with snow blanketing the ground by late Monday morning in the Adirondack Mountains.

Snowfall in these areas has been caused by a cold upper-level low-pressure system pivoting through the region. This setup can bring snowfall to higher elevations where temperatures are colder, while lower elevations are stuck with rain.

Tuesday morning, a half-inch of snow coated the ground in northern Maine's Clayton Lake. A nearby location along the Canadian border picked up 1.5 inches, according to a report sent to the National Weather Service.

A dusting of snow also covered the ground in northern Vermont, as this webcam near the town of Jay showed Tuesday morning.

Farther south, snow was seen in the higher elevations of West Virginia Tuesday morning.

Snowfall was possible as far south as the Appalachians in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee by Tuesday night, so more wintry scenes like these could be ahead.
