The National Park Service was created on Aug. 25, 1916, which means it's been in existence for 107 years this month. People across the country and all over the world are invited to celebrate the NPS's birthday by visiting one of its more than 400 national park sites throughout the U.S.

In August 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service to "preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations." The act at that time protected 35 national parks and monuments and those to be established in the future.

In addition to visiting the park sites, people are also invited to follow the official National Park Service social media channels and join in the fun by using the #NPSBirthday hashtag. The NPS would also love to hear about park lovers' personal connections with park sites by posting on social media using the #YourParkStory hashtag. The National Park Service is even accepting submissions to feature certain touching stories on their social media platforms.

Wherever you choose to celebrate, be sure to take lots of pictures. Our national parks are home to some of the country's most beautiful landscapes, from mountains to river valleys to forests and everything in between.
