5 Easy Tips For More Sustainable Travel

Exploring different parts of the world is arguably one of the most rewarding things you can do.

But in my experience, as my eyes are opened to even more of the beauty of the Earth, it's a stark reminder that my traveling has helped play a part in hurting our planet.

The good news? There are small changes that you can make which will ensure that your trip is more eco-friendly.

And it’s not just about minimizing the negative impacts.

Sustainable travel is also about increasing the positive impact you have on the environment and community of the places you are traveling to.

So, let’s jump into some easy tips and tricks.

1. Take Fewer, Longer Trips

Traveling less often, but spending more time there, is better for the environment than more frequent, short trips.

The resources used for transportation - particularly air travel - often account for the biggest portions of your carbon footprint. So, staying settled in one location or region for a longer period of time helps cut that down.

Another thing to consider: Which location you are choose to visit.

Picking a destination that is off the beaten path can help prevent 'overtourism' in a region.

If you're really looking to take a 'green' vacation, consider picking a city that is already prioritizing sustainability, such as Bristol in England or Copenhagen in Denmark.

2. Pack Light, Including Reusable Items

This one may be easier said than done, if you're anything like me.

But, it's a simple way to make a big difference.

Traveling light makes it easier to move around on foot or by bike while also making your trip more fuel-efficient by car.

You should also always stick in a reusable water bottle and refillable toiletry containers to help eliminate the waste that comes from single-use products.

3. Consider More Eco-Friendly Transport

As I mentioned above, how you get to your destination can be the cornerstone of your trip's carbon footprint.

And while all modes of transportation require energy, there are some that are more efficient and sustainable than others.

To cut down on emissions, consider traveling by train or via electric car.

If you have to fly, keep this acronym in mind: NERD. New planes, Economy seats, Regular-sized aircrafts and Direct flights are the ways to stay Earth-friendly when buying plane tickets.

Once you arrive to your destination, utilize public transportation, walking and biking to get where you need to go.

4. Visit National Parks, Conservation Areas

National parks and other protected areas are key to preserving biodiversity and natural resources around the world.

And the tourism fees they charge help to ensure that these special places and species stay protected.

This is a win-win: getting to help the environment through your money while also getting to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of our planet.

Remember, though, to leave the area undisturbed, so that future generations can enjoy as well.

5. Eat And Shop Local

My last simple tip is to pour back into the local community that is pouring into you.

Looking to bring home some souvenirs? Shop from local artisans or community-owned stores.

Hungry for a bite to eat? Stop at a neighborhood restaurant that serves locally sourced food.

These things will not only help you leave a positive impact on your destination-of-choice but will also help you get a more authentic understanding of their little corner of the world.
