July's temperature outlook has trended hotter along much of the East Coast, while the northern tier is anticipated to be somewhat cooler than previously forecast.

Much of the country is expected to see above-average temperatures in July: The hottest conditions, when compared to July's already scorching average temperatures, are expected from southern New England, the mid-Atlantic and Southeast westward to the Ohio Valley, Central Plains and central Rockies, according to an update released Friday by The Weather Company and Atmospheric G2.

Not everyone will contend with sustained heat in July: The Pacific Northwest and coastal California may see slightly cooler-than-average conditions in the new month.

Meanwhile, the forecast has trended less hot from the Northern Plains into the upper Midwest, northern Great Lakes and northern New England, when compared to a previous forecast issued earlier in June. So while those areas might still see above-average temperatures overall, it could be to a lesser degree than originally anticipated.

East could see a drier than typical July, but the upper Midwest might continue its soggy stretch: Drought conditions have recently developed in parts of the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, following a hot, dry June. A drier-than-average July might worsen drought in these areas, or cause it to develop in new locations.

The forecast calls for at least a somewhat wetter-than-average July in the north-central states. That unfortunately includes recently-flooded parts of southeast South Dakota, southern Minnesota and northwest Iowa.

In the West, Northern California, Oregon and adjacent parts of Nevada and Idaho have increased odds for a drier-than-average July.
