What Meteorologists Check On Their Weather Apps

If you’ve ever stepped outside expecting a perfect day, only to get hit with sticky heat, gusty winds or a surprise downpour, you already know this: Checking the weather is more crucial than a quick glance at the temperature.

Meteorologist Rob Shackelford stresses, “Be very, very in tune with the forecast for your day if you're gonna do anything outside.”

That means looking beyond the high temperature and digging into timing, humidity, wind and rain chances.

Timing can make or break your plans. “If you're a runner like me, you may not wanna run super early in the morning because your relative humidities are actually higher,” Shackelford explains. “It feels like I'm running in a bathtub.”

Interestingly, some people actually prefer later in the day. It sounds counterintuitive, but lower humidity can make a big difference in how your body cools itself.

That’s where the heat index comes in, also known as the “feels like” temperature.

Shackelford puts it plainly: “You're gonna wanna look at that heat index because it could feel a lot hotter depending on how humid it is outside.”

He also points out something many people miss: "Check your app for air quality. If there's any sort of smoke in the atmosphere, it could be drifting hundreds of miles to your location.”

Even if the sky looks clear, the air you’re breathing might not be ideal, especially for workouts or long periods outside.

Meteorologists also watch bigger weather patterns to help plan ahead.

“You can generally plan an event a day or two after a cold front comes through, and generally you have some cooler, drier conditions," Shackelford says.

On the flip side, “The day before a cold front, it's miserable,” thanks to warm, humid air building up. If you’ve ever wondered why one day feels unbearable and the next feels amazing, that’s often why.

For everyday tasks like yard work, small details matter too. “You don't wanna be doing lots of yard work on a very windy day or a day when it's about to rain,” Shackelford says. A quick wind check can save you a lot of frustration.

Then there are the unpredictable moments, like pop-up storms.

“Even if you see something like 30% chance of showers and storms, that doesn't mean it's not gonna happen," Shackelford notes. "It also is not a measure of how intense the storm is."

This is where radar becomes your best tool. “Look at your radar on your app and see just how far away the storm is and how long that rain is going to happen,” he explains.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to being prepared. With just a few extra checks, you can avoid the worst of the heat, dodge storms and make the most of your time outside.
