Unusual January Warmth Can Be Your Flu Defense

Unusually warm temperatures across much of the country could turn out to be an unexpected ally as you try to keep your new year’s resolution to exercise more. The springlike temperatures could also be your shield against rising flu infections across the country.

Who hasn’t been a victim of the January rush on gyms? Sweaty, concentrated crowds in an enclosed space are a perfect recipe for spreading viruses.

But don’t give up on your 2026 workout goals yet, just switch the location and get outside.

Warmer temperatures are unfolding this week, Weather.com digital meteorologist Caitlin Kaiser says some places across the Plains, Northeast and South will see temperatures soar 20-25 degrees above average. She adds, “Dozens of record warm highs and lows could be broken with temperatures rising into the 70s and 80s across the South.”

This weather pattern creates a “wellness window” for you. You can safely get outside and exercise while minimizing your exposure to circulating viruses. Outdoor physical activity also offers health advantages that indoor workouts cannot match.

Natural sunlight can increase your vitamin D production, which can give you an immunity boost. Experts say even just 20 to 30 minutes of sun exposure can help strengthen your body’s natural defenses.

Multiple studies have highlighted other benefits of outdoor workouts: from the fresh air improving your cardiovascular health, to the mental health benefits of being out in natural settings.

To capitalize on the weather, here are some tips:

  • Plan your workout during midday hours when temperatures peak
  • Dress in layers to adjust to temperature changes
  • Explore local parks and trails
  • Exercise with friends to increase accountability (and fun!)

Of course, this warm weather pattern won’t last too long, but think of it as an on-ramp, an easier path to help you start making your 2026 exercise goals a habit, before the cold returns.
